-I've covered mine, have you covered your eyes? tell me since mine are covered and i can't see yours. -said J.
- yes, mine are also covered. and since you 've done what I've been asking you to do, make your imagination and fantasy works, and on the way to pixieland -known as Wonderland we will pass by the Profdom of Godnat. Fasten your seatbelt (read: PeterPan'sArms'SurroundingSystem) and listen the story...
Good, now before you remove your hands close your eyes:) now that we are all ready, the story can begin.
The story of Professor Godnat starts a long long time ago, even before there was any living people, and before there were any monkeys, or little mice even. More than 3000 million years ago....3000 million years ago is really a long time.
3000 million years ago the little animals first started to dream little simple dreams. I say animals but really they were more just little living things. Little creatures that where so small that you and i would not be able to see them without a very big microscope. Their dreams would be about were to find food, or hidding places from bigger small creatures and other important things like that. But they were real as your dreams and my dreams, eventhough they were very short dreams. Since it was very dangerous 3000 million years ago the little creatures did not sleep for that long. Really
And furthermore when the little itty bitty creature had a dream it would not remember it, in fact no one would remember it and the dream would disappear. All the dreams would be lost. Almost as if they had never been. What a shame. Not to remember any dreams at all. That is no fun for anyone. Imagine if you had a very good dream, it would be great to remember it and smile, wouldn't it? You would remember what it was like to fly as a bird, or breath water as a fish, or walking on the moon:)
And you know a funny thing about a dream, is that it feels real. When we dream, it feels like it is really happening and we don't even notice that we are dreaming. It is almost like when we fall asleep we are given a key to another dimenson where anything can happen. Flowers and horses can talk, tortoises can fly and trees can walk ... you know what?. Sleep is a key, to the realm of Professor Godnat and the spirits, and people who are not here anymore and many other wierd and wonderful things we can't even imagine yet. But we can try. And someday we will succeed;) And this realm or dimension is almost like here, exept they don't have cars, or trains or airplanes, because they can fly, and they don't have telephones or restaurants either. But that is a completely different story, for another night perhaps.
So back to the story and back in history about 3000 million years ago when the first dreams started and the little creatures started to be able to visit the dream dimension. And when Professor Godnat discovered earth because of these little simple dreams.
In the begining the dreams were very simple but soon and fast they became bigger, longer and in color, and some of the dreams where really beautiful. Dreams of wonderful things, like living clouds with british and french beards eating grapes and playing bird toosing, and fantastique emotions, like ridding in a big rollercoaster or sneezing. But they were still only there for a little while and then they would be forgotten, no-one would remember them. Not even Professor Godnat, could catch them and keep them for studying or just as little dream movies for others to watch and enjoy.
For millions of years the Professor was trying to find a way to study the dreams. How did they work, were did they come from, when was it a good dream and when was it not a good dream, and did it have anything to do with what the little creatures, who where getting bigger and soon turning into the first "real animals", were eating, what they used for a bed, or if they had a big nose like an ant-eater or big flapping ears like an elephant?? No one knew because no-one could remember the dreams.
But one day something wonderful happened, when the professor was walking along in one of his own dreams. He was in a jungle full of flowers in every color of the rainbow, and birds singing songs that just made you happy and glad to be alive. Walking along, feeling good about himself and the day (he did not notice he was dreaming, you see) he met a girl, or womyn, it was acually very hard to tell how old she was. But it did not matter too much anyway because she was the most beautiful thing, and the Professor almost felt a little tingleling in his stomach, when she appeared out of thin air. Eventhough maybe she had been there all along, all the time...he was not totally sure.
She was sort of glowing like the sun, or when sunrays break through the clouds and make a beam of light, and when the sun sets and paints the sky in colors of cold, and rubies.
Professor Godnat almost forgot to breath when she suddenly spoke
She opened her mouth, a very beautiful mouth, like a orkid opening its leaves to greet the sun in the morning, like a smile a little cat yawning, and a gentile voice from a very old time was heard. A voice like soft, relaxing music coming from everywere around them... From the forest, the flowers and the birds and the butterflies all singing in the same syncronized voice, like a big wonderful choir. The mountains and waterfalls as the bass,
and the old majestic trees as tenors..."Dear Professor i have seen your dream and i will help you". The Professor could hardly believe his ears and for a short moment he blinked, as we all do, and suddenly they were at a lake. A silent lake. Deep and blue. Empty. Not even a small leaf was making ripples on the surface. Like the lake of Narsissus. Perfect for reflections the Professor thought...
"do you see this empty lake Professor" and he did, so he said "yes"
"This lake is the night sky of the planet earth, this lake is the empty space called the univers. This lake will be the memorybank for your studies of the phenomenon called dreams."
The Professor stood still, a little overwhelmed looking at the lake, when without thinking he bursted out "But the lake is so dark. How will i ever find the dreams again?"
Even before he could finish the whole sentence, she had taken out a turtlesheel (from a turtle that had died naturally of old age) and had put it on a blue rock with a sort of purplish glow. A strange rock the professor thought, since he still did not know he was in a dream.
She took out a diamond and cut a small hole in her fingertip and a golden glowing liquid started to flow into the turtle shell. The shell was soon filled and the cut in the finger stopped dripping. "the first dream to be put in this lake will your dream Professor Godnat." She grabed something out of the air, dipped it in the turtleshells goldenglowing liquid, and a small round shape appeard.
"This is the shape of dreams Professor, round and perfect, now i put this dream, your dream, in the lake so you will remember"
***plop***the dream floated in the lake. A bright shining round dream. A golden dream.
The Professor woke up abruptly to the sound of coconuts falling. He looked up and saw a nut thundering towards him!!
He rolled to the side!!
A near miss...
....puyhh!!
He looked up from underneath his arms over his head and saw something. Something he had never seen before. A net on a stick. First he wondered but then he suddently remembered the dream. He remembered a dream... a dream about a lake, and a womyn, flowers that could sing.
"I give you this net Professor Godnat. Made by the diamond spider that lives in this forest. Strong enough to catch a galloping elephant, delicate enough not to harm the wings of a butterfly. You shall use it to catch all the dreams of every very little and very big creature, and of all the creatures in between. You shall dip them in this, my golden blood, so they can be seen by all. And you shall place the dreams in this lake called the univers"
And so he did. The Professor. For millions and millions of years, every night he is catching dreams. Collecting them in a big bag. And when he sleeps (because everyone needs to sleep, everyone from the Professor to even the smallest grasshopper) he goes, in his dream, to the the forest and the lake and dips the dreams in the turtle shell and carefully places them in the lake. Remember i told you how sleep was like a key to the dreamworld. Well the Professors sleep is the key to the forest and the lake so no-one else can go there but the Professor. Because only the Professor can sleep as the Professor can. That makes sence right? no-none can sleep your sleep can they.
So when ever you look up at the stars, on the night sky in the univers, what you really see are all the dreams ever dreamed. And sometimes you see a new star, or someone else discovers a new star and that means that a new dream has been dreamed and the professor has caught it, and put it in the univers so it does not disappear. So everyone can look at it and study it.
But there are so many you say. How can we know one from the other? Well you see Professor Godnat did not become a Professor because he was stupid. There is a system. A clever system.
Imagine how hard it would be to study the dreams if they were all together in one big cluster. It would be impossible to distinguish one from the other, even for the Professor. Look. Can you see the shape, that those five stars are making? it is called a constellation. A constellation is the professors way of organizing the dreams. So if you see a pattern of stars, then that means that those dreams are almost similar. It could be dreams about sjokotarta for instant, or adventures in a strange country.
That is how he does it.
There are also galaxies and solarsystems and planets, and wierd ways of transportation between the stars, because they can be very far apart you know. But that is all very complex and complicated this late in the evening, and really sometimes i don't even understand it.
But you know what?
Have you ever seen a shooting star. Remember the color of dreams. Golden Glowing. A shooting star is really a dream flying down to someone. So whenever you see a shooting star you know that someone is going to get a great dream delivered by the Professor.
Sometimes you can look at the night sky for a long time without seeing any dreams falling from the sky, but that does not mean they are not there. Maybe you were looking in the opposite direction, or it is hidden behind a cloud, or you blinked for a short moment, like we all do and the Professor did in the forest, and you just missed it. Or maybe there are just many new dreams that night. And sometimes you will see hundreds of shooting stars. It is called a meteor shower, in a fanzy human word. But really it is the professor reminding us that there are many good dreams to be dreamed. Many dreams, and that sometimes we should try something different from what we usually dream.
So before we fall asleep, we must always remember to say godnat (or goodnight, in english). We are accually calling for the professor by calling his name "Godnat" . We call him to our bed so he can listen to what dreams we would like to dream that night, so he can bring it to you.
So close your eyes, principessa and lay down comfortable, and think of a star you like....
ready?
yes...
Godnat :*
