The night peter pan learned something...

i really feel that i learned some important things last night. Not just about bears but also trekking in generel, i feel like writing about it on the blog, but i am busy today making sweek, and the speech for my fathers girlfriend....And the manuscript, buti think it will not get the greatest attention today

About bears i can safely say that i hope we see one from a good safe distance, and wolfs i am not concerned about at all. As far as i am concerned i have never heard of a wolf attacking humyns.

But if we see a bear, it is important to "Be Bear Aware"

All bears are happy big fuzzy creatures that really just wants to be left alone to them selves, and in generel try to avoid humyn contact. So in short if you don't mess with the bear the bears will not mess with you and that also means respecting that you are a visitor in the bears home. And you don't trash or provoke or do anything to make your host uncomfortable when you visit your friends home, right?. So naturally you will also take this care and attention to the bears home.

- Bears think primarily with their stomach, so:

* Keep the camp clean of any food leftovers, wash the dishes. Burn what can be burned.

* When cooking take attention not to cook in the middle of the camp but some meters away. But keep food in the camp, but hang it somewhere the bear cannot reach it.

* Don't bring really smelly food like bacon, smoked fish, because bears likes to use there noses...

When moving about in bear-homes you should remember that:

* Bears, like most humyns, really do not appreciate being frightent by a sudden suprise. That means you should always anounce your presence when traversing in the forest or thick shrubberies. Sing a song in a calm voice, brake some twiggs. You can try to walk with the wind in your back so the bear has a change to smell you from a distance, (yes they can;)

* if you see potencial bear food (dead animals in particular since they smell) stay clear, and Be Bear Aware

* Bears are comfortable creatures that do not like to use to much energy. That means that they use roads, dirt tracks, animal trails to move, so take special care not to camp on top of one of these bear roads. You would like it either if someone parked there car in the middle of the road.

* When you come to a friends home, you ring the doorbell and identify yourself and you're let in for the party. The same is the case when you come to a bears home. Make yourself know, identify yourself as humyn. You can do this by talking in a calm voice, waving your arms in a relaxed manner.

Sometimes the bear does not recognize you as humyn and might stand on its legs, to have a better sniff or look. It might come a little closer. You can try to move away from the bear in a diagonal direction, but if the bear follows. Stop right away, and keep standing, speaking in a calm voice, and waving your arms slowly.

If the bear come really really close raise you voice, bang some pots, use noisemakers, but do not make highpitch voices or imitate bear language since most of us don't know bearribian...Sometimes the bear will run fast towards you, stay still. Most of the time it is just testing if you are agressive yourself and will often stop 10 feet in front of you. Keep speaking to the bear. DO NOT LOOK INTO THE BEARS EYES

If it makes contact, fall on your stomach and play dead, surrender to the bear, and it will most times think it has won and leave you right after a good sniff nd some pocking. Use your toes and albows to stay on your stomach or keep rolling until you land on you stomach agian. (the bear is curious) But stay on the ground for as long as you think the bear might be around. Cover you head and neck with your arms and hands.
If the bears starts to eat you fight back with everything you have. If you die and is eaten it is not the most unfortunately way. Thik of all the newspaper headlines you will make...your friends will ask "what happened to peter anyway?" " don't you remember. He was eaten by a bear". See, it is kind of a cool way to give back to mother earth. Mucher cooler than " he died of a heart attack, just like everyone else) And if you live you will have a great story and fanzy scares.

It is important to know that if you give the bear a chance to avoid you, it will. Really they are good citiezens of the mountains and forests and will do the best to make you feel comfortable. So as a good visitor you should always try to help your host to make your stay a good one.

Bears are intelligent, polite creatures that have a keen sence of adventure and exploring new things just like you and me, but they also like to have their privat space. So give the bear plenty of room and look out for any agressive behavior. ANd be very happy if you see a bear. It does not happen often.
